2017 Solar Permitting Plan Review

Synopsis:

This is an interactive course designed to provide a practical process to consistently review plans. A code official who is a national expert in solar plan review facilitates as participants learn how to evaluate a plan for compliance, with an emphasis on identifying the errors most frequently encountered in the plan review and in the field inspection. Each participant is given a solar plan for learning.

After completing this training, you will be able to evaluate a complete solar permit package to ensure it is compliant with building, fire and electrical codes relevant to your jurisdiction, if you are given a site plan, electrical diagram, manufacturers’ specification sheets and installation instructions.

CEUs from IAEI and ICC are available.  This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.

Instructor:

Pete Jackson is currently the chief electrical inspector for the city of Bakersfield, California. Following college, he served a four year apprenticeship as an inside wireman through the Kern County JATC, attaining the status of journeyman wireman in 1984. Pete was co-owner of an electrical contracting firm for ten years prior to joining the Bakersfield Building Department in 2005. Pete holds five electrical inspector certifications through the IAEI and ICC. He instructed apprentice and journeyman electricians through the Kern County JATC for seven years. Pete holds memberships in IAEI, NFPA, ICC, IBEW and serves as an AHJ representative on over twenty Standards Technical Panels for Underwriters Laboratories. He represents the IAEI as principle member of NEC Code Making Panel 8Pete was a member of the committees that developed and updated the California Solar Permitting Guidebook.

Synopsis:   After all the recent code changes, this class is intended to help put the Residential Code in to perspective by exploring the major provisions of the 2016 California Residential Code.  The presentation includes detailed discussions of the provisions addressing the following issues:  building planning; foundation, floor, wall and roof construction; exterior wall finishes; and roofing systems. 

CEUs are available.  This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.

Instructor: Stephen L. Thomas, CBO, President of Colorado Code Consulting, LLC

Mr. Thomas has thirty years of experience in working with building codes including plan reviews, inspections and administration.  His firm provides building code consulting services for governmental agencies and architectural firms, as well as educational seminars on building codes.  Starting a building code-consulting firm in 1999, he has served as the contract Building Official for local jurisdictions in Colorado.  Mr. Thomas has served on several ICBO committees and recently served as the Chairman of the ICC Means of Egress Code Development Committee. He is also the author of the book, Building Code Basics, Based on the 2009 & 2012 IBC available from ICC. He has presented building code classes for the last 25 years and provides an interesting and engaging look at building codes.  He has actively participated in the code development hearings for the IRC and IBC, and provides insight into the background of the code changes.

2017 Marijuana and the Building Codes

Synopsis:   With passage of legalized marijuana in California, inquiries for new and modifications to existing structures for such facilities have already begun. This fast-paced seminar has been created to discuss facilities: use, egress, electrical concerns, hazards (MAQ’s), mechanical (exhaust and ventilation), occupancies, plumbing issues, sprinklers and waste disposal. Further discussion will address the potential impact of such legislation on the built environment, based on situations that have been encountered in other states that have previously passed similar legislation and what effects California’s law might have on local jurisdictions.

CEUs are available.  This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.
